Clay Allison was indeed a good old Southern boy and one of the great gunfighters of the west...Clay was born in Tennessee and served and fought in the Confederate Army and was a prisoner of war in Alabama.... After the war ended Mr. Allison moved to Texas where he bounced between many states driving cattle and leading a rambountious life.. I really don't think Clay's writing on his tombstone is exactly correct about never killing a man who didn't need killing.... Clay finally settled in Texas, married and had two children and died when a loaded wagon went out of control and the back wheels ran him over... ...
