That is unreal. Kids should have answered, " Americans, WHO are you? ".
But without a doubt the kids were being sincere in their questioning albeit a little direct - but that's politics; they have a right to ask as the civil servant had a right not to answer on the spot - in keeping with the office he was elected to. No excuses and his apology is lame. There is no excuse for that - he should be turffed and if it was a republican it would have been headlines screaming bloody blue murder until that person was out of office. Sometimes actions do speak louder than words; like election results this coming November.
