How To Cut Unemployment By 20%

(FLP Opinion) - I received this from a buddy with some common sense. He offers an excellent suggestion that puts the remaining stimulus funds ($525 Billion) to good use, while simultaneously cutting unemployment by 20%.

Here's the plan:

Enlist 2.5 million able bodied men and women for a four-year DOMESTIC MILITARY SERVICE commitment. This would immediately cut unemployment by 20%.

Here's how it works:

  • Total Enlisted - 2,500,000
  • Average Salary/Benefits/Expenses - $50,000
  • Enlistment Term - Four years
  • Bonus - $10,000 bonus when their service is completed
  • Total Four-Year Cost = $525 Billion

The enlistees would be stationed on our borders, in our seaports and in our airports to combat terrorism, drug trafficking, illegal immigration, etc.

Consider the problems this would solve:

  • Unemployment would be reduced by 20% initially, and by more with each succeeding year of the plan.
  • Remaining stimulus funds would all be spent domestically.
  • Country would be more secure from terrorism by protecting our airports, seaports and borders.
  • A major drug smuggling route would be eliminated along with the violence and corruption it creates.
  • Illegal immigration would be impeded as would other forms of human trafficking and smuggling.
  • 2.5 million highly trained job applicants would be available four years down the road.

This is exactly the type of strategy that got us out of the Great Depression - only now we would be fighting domestic threats - not the New Deal as many liberals tout.

Sorry, but I couldn't find any additional funds for ACORN.
